i remember someone using a very faint window tint on the outside, but that can be easily scratched very quickly. another method i remember hearing about was a transparent enamel paint. i think the person sprayed it on the outside and that it faded/weathered down after awhile, but if one were to spray it on the inside then the weathering effect would be diminished. (of course you also have to go to the trouble of prying the housing apart.) personally, i dont think its worth the diminishing of light output (be it mild or not) for the blacked out effect, but then i dont really care for the entirely blacked out effect anyhow.
